یک فروند هواپیمای مسافربری بوئینگ متعلق به خطوط هوایی «ایر نیوگینی» بامداد جمعه در آب‌های اقیانوس آرام در نزدیکی جزیرۀ میکرونزی درون دریا افتاد. «ایر نیوگینی» شرکت هواپیمایی ملیِ کشور پاپوآ گینه نو است. کشوری که در اقیانوس آرام در شمال استرالیا و شرق اندونزی قرار دارد. به گفتۀ رسانه‌های محلی، هواپیما به دلایل نامشخص باند فرودگاه را رد کرد و در انتهای باند در آب‌های اطراف فرود آمد. این هواپیما ۳۶ مسافر و یازده خدمه داشت. نیمی از هواپیما در همان لحظات اولیه به زیر آب فرو رفت اما نیروهای امدادی و افراد محلی توانستند سرنشینان را نجات دهند. به هیچ‌یک از سرنشینان آسیب جدی نرسیده است و همۀ آنها برای معاینات پزشکی به بیمارستان منتقل شده‌اند. جیمی امیلیو، مدیرکل فرودگاه میکرونزی می‌گوید: «هواپیما باید در این فرودگاه فرود می‌آمد اما 137 متر دورتر به دریا افتاد. دقیقا نمی‌دانیم چه اتفاقی افتاده است. مردم با قایق نجات یافتند اما هواپیما در حال غرق شدن است.» مسافران می‌گویند پس از فرودی با تکان‌های شدید، سوراخ بزرگی در بدنه هواپیما ایجاد شده و اب به درون هواپیما امده است.
