Russia, China veto anti-Iran UNSC resolution on Strait of Hormuz

The Bahrain-proposed draft resolution failed to be approved. Eleven members of the council voted in favor of it. Two other UNSC members – Pakistan and Columbia – abstained.

Bahrain, which along with some other Arab countries, has given access to the United States and Israel to use its territories to carry out attacks against Iran, aimed to achieve its political goals by exploiting its status as the rotatory president of the UN Security Council.

The measure failed despite having full backing from Washington.

Bahrain had proposed the draft resolution on behalf of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council member states – except for Oman – and Jordan.

The vote came just hours before a deadline issued by US President Donald Trump for Iran to open the Strati of Hormuz or face attacks on its power plants and bridges will pass.

One-fifth of the world’s oil typically passes through the strait, and Iran’s restrictions during the US-Israeli aggression has sent global energy prices soaring.

The Bahraini resolution was repeatedly watered down in hopes China and Russia would abstain.

The initial proposal would have authorized countries to use “all necessary means” — UN wording that would include military action — to open the Strait of Hormuz.
