Tropical Storm Sergio hit Mexico's northwestern state of Baja California Sur on Friday, said the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

According to the SMN, wind speeds were exceeding 85 kilometers per hour when the storm hit the town of Mulege, on the Baja California Peninsula's eastern coast, at 5:30 a.m. local time (1030 GMT).

Sergio is weakening as it moves through the territory, though the SMN have warned it may produce intense localized storms and waves of up to six meters near the coasts.

Authorities predicted the storm will continue east across the Gulf of California before touching down in the northwestern state of Sonora on Friday evening as a tropical depression.

Baja California Sur authorities on Thursday suspended schools and closed ports ahead of Sergio's arrival.

Sergio formed as a tropical storm on Sept. 29 before growing to a Category 4 hurricane while in the Pacific, far from Mexican soil.

However, on Oct. 8, Sergio began moving towards Baja California Sur, and weakened to a tropical storm once more.
