A senior U.S. official will visit South Korea this week to discuss the Trump administration's policy on Iran and its nuclear program, the State Department said Monday.

Christopher Ford, assistant secretary of state for international security and nonproliferation, will travel to Seoul and Tokyo Monday through Wednesday in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from an international nuclear accord with Tehran.

"The United States is working with nations around the world to create a new global effort to counter Iran's nuclear and proliferation threats, as well as its support for terrorism, militancy, and continued development and testing of ballistic missiles," the State Department said in a statement.

The discussions in Seoul and Tokyo will include the issue of reimposing nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.

Ford will lead a U.S. government delegation that also includes Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Andrew Peek.
