New Zealand authorities will launch a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the deaths and injuries of tourists caught up in the volcanic eruption on White Island.
Five people have been confirmed dead and eight are presumed dead. Another 31 are in hospital with injuries.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday New Zealand's Deputy commissioner Don Tims said there would be an investigation into whether anyone was criminally responsible for the deaths and injuries.
"It's early days yet. So we're just going to have to work through the evidence, talk to people, and conduct the investigation" he said.
