Confusion hovers over the future of the Tunisian Truth and Dignity Commission. The relates to the question as t whether its work should be extended or not after its first term ended with little impact.

Primarily the dispute revolves around the commission’s release of an explanatory statement and archival and historical documents which was critical of Tunisias relations with France, and appeared to claim that Tunisia remained dependent on France to some extent.

The Transitional Justice Law was passed by the Tunisian parliament in December 2013. The law gave the Truth and Dignity Commission a four-year term (which expired last February) that could be extended by one year to enforce transitional justice, which covers the period from the dawn of independence to the end of 2013.

The Assembly of the Representatives of the People (parliament) decided on Saturday to adjourn the plenary session to vote on the decision to extend the work of the Truth and Dignity Commission to Monday, and insisted that the President of the Commission Sihem Bensedrine must be present.

This came after a contentious session which witnessed dispute between those who want to end the work of the Commission and those who insist on its continuity, which prompted the Speaker of Parliament to adjourn the session.
