سافرجت به زنانی گفته می‌شد که در اوایل قرن بیستم برای بدست آوردن حق رای برای زنان فعالیت سیاسی انجام می‌دادند. برجسته‌ترین اقدامات سافرجت‌ها در بریتانیا به رهبری املین پنکهرست انجام می‌شد. هرچند ایرلند (فقط برای زنان صاحب ملک)، نیوزیلند و استرالیای جنوبی در قرن نوزدهم به زنان حق رای داده بودند، اما این حق تا سال 1918 در بریتانیا به رسمیت شناخته نمی‌شد. مبارزات سافرجت‌ها به خشونت گرایش پیدا کرد و پس از مدتی آن‌ها تلاش کردند که با آتش زدن صندوق‌های پست و شکستن شیشه‌ها جامعه را مجبور به پذیرش حق آن‌ها برای رای دادن کنند. در میان اقدامات سافرجت‌ها شاید حادثه دربی اپسم مهمترین اقدام اعتراضی باشد. امیلی دیویدسون، فعال سافرجت با پریدن به میان پیست اسب‌دوانی جلو اسب پادشاه را گرفت و در اثر برخورد با آن به کما رفته و سپس از دنیا رفت. دوربین‌های خبری این اقدام را ضبط کردند و هزاران سافرجت در مراسم خاکسپاری وی شرکت کردند. نیت او از انجام این کار مشخص نیست. او پیش از این اقدام توضیحی در مورد آن نداده بود و نظرات مختلفی مانند قصد خودکشی، حادثه بودن این واقعه یا تلاش برای نصب پرچم سافرجت‌ها روی اسب پادشاه هیچ‌کدام قطعا ثابت نشده‌اند. در میزان تاثیر اقدامات سافرجت‌ها روی بدست آمدن حق رای برای زنان اختلاف نظر وجود دارد و برخی از مورخان معتقد هستند حتی بدون چنین اقداماتی نیز به مرور زمان زنان حق رای را بدست می‌آوردند. تصاویری از لحظه برخورد امیلی دیویدسون با اسب شاه بریتانیا را همراه با توضیحاتی در مورد نیات و عوامل اقدام وی در ویدیو تابناک با زیرنویس فارسی ببینید.
