Iran's nuclear deal change "technically" undoable - Mogherini

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Friday the European Union was committed to Iran's nuclear agreement, which was a security priority for Europe, and added that calls for reviewing deal's articles was "technically undoable."

The nuclear agreement with Iran is a "security priority" for Europe and the whole region, and all 28 EU member states agree the deal "should be implemented fully," Mogherini said in remarks during a session of Rome Mediterranean Dialogue (MED 2017).

She was referring to EU's position if the US imposed new sanctions on Iran.

Mogherini said the 104-page nuclear agreement included inspection measures by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"It is not possible to reconsider one of the pages or paragraphs because they are very technical," she said.
Mogherini reiterated that the EU sents similar messages to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and American President Donald Trump that the agreement, which was adopted as a UN Security Council resolution, should be preserved and implemented.

Iran signed the nuclear agreement with the P5+1 group (UNSC five permanent members plus Germany) in mid-2015.

The agreement downgraded Iran's nuclear capabilities in return of lifting of economic sanctions.

Mogherini, meanwhile, said the Middle East and the Gulf regions needed a security structure that enabled their countries to co-exist despite differences.

She said the EU was getting ready to provide financial assistance to help the Syrians return to their homes.
Mogherini added that the EU was also ready to fund reconstruction in the de-escalation zones in Syria.
