US legislation temporarily banning deliveries of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) to Turkey became law on 13 August.

The fiscal year 2019 (FY 2019) National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) bars F-35 deliveries to Turkey until the Pentagon delivers a report within 90 days to the appropriate congressional defence committees. This report must include several topics.

The report must assess Turkey's potential purchase of the Russian S-400 air and missile defence system and the potential effects this might have on the US-Turkey bilateral relationship.
