Specialists at Royan Institute performed ‘Laparoscopic Ovarian Transposition’ (LOT) on two prepubertal girls diagnosed with ‘Ewing sarcoma’, relocating their ovaries outside the pelvic radiation field prior to radiotherapy.
Dr. Firouzeh Ghaffari, a gynecologist and infertility specialist at the Institute, confirmed that three years after surgery, both girls have undergone normal pubertal development and maintain healthy ovarian function. Without the procedure, they would have faced a high risk of permanent infertility.
“This success underscores the importance of integrating fertility preservation into pediatric cancer care,” Dr. Ghaffari said. “As survival rates improve, protecting patients’ future quality of life—including their ability to have children—has become a vital part of treatment.”
The achievement highlights the value of early multidisciplinary collaboration between oncology and reproductive medicine teams, and reinforces Royan Institute’s leadership in oncofertility and comprehensive supportive care for young cancer patients.
