US assaults on Iranian coastal facilities violate war-end MoU

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry described the Friday night attacks by the “terrorist US army” on several sites along Iran’s southern coastline as a “blatant violation” of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and “a clear breach of Paragraph 1 of the memorandum of understanding on the termination of the imposed war” signed on June 18.

The ministry said the “barbaric” attacks targeted Iran’s coastal surveillance facilities.

Referring to coordinated Israeli attacks on Lebanon carried out with US backing, the Foreign Ministry said those actions also constituted “a clear violation of Paragraph 1 of the memorandum of understanding on the termination of the war.”

Reaffirming Iran’s inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the statement said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will defend the country’s sovereignty, security, and national interests with all its strength. The defensive strikes by the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran against targets linked to the aggressor US forces were carried out on this basis.”

“Responsibility for the consequences of this situation rests with the aggressor and treaty-breaking US regime and the parties that, in any way, cooperate in carrying out US acts of aggression against Iran,” it added.

The Foreign Ministry also called on all countries along the southern shores of the Persian Gulf to uphold the principle of good neighborliness and the fundamental rule of international law prohibiting their territories and facilities from being used by aggressor parties to launch hostile actions against Iran.

The ministry urged the UN secretary-general, the Security Council, and other responsible international bodies not to remain indifferent to US violations of the UN Charter and international law and to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities for regional and international peace and security.

Earlier in the day, the United States Central Command said it had carried out attacks against some targets in Iran in return for an Iranian drone strike against a vessel on Thursday while it was departing the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast.

In response, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy targeted several US military positions in the region, warning that any future attacks would draw “a broader response than this.”
