The US and the Israeli regime launched a large-scale unprovoked military campaign against Iran following the assassination of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, along with several senior military commanders and civilians on February 28.
The attacks have involved extensive aerial strikes on both military and civilian locations across Iran, causing significant casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure.
In response, the Iranian Armed Forces have carried out retaliatory operations, targeting American and Israeli positions in the occupied territories and at regional bases with waves of missiles and drones.
To know more about the miscalculation of the US President, TABNAK reached out to Dr. Osman faruk Logoglu, Former Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary and member of CHP.
Here is the full text of the interview with him:
Trump says that he has postpond US attack on Iran's energy infraustructures. Some say he is trying to buy time. What do you think of this?
Trump knows he has lost the war. He is now buying time to declare victory and end the military operations. The deployment of US troops to the war region is yet another Trump ploy to pressure Iran into submission. There is no way Trump can afford to lose American lives in a ground operation; the war is already unpopular in the US. When he thinks he can end the war in a way that helps him save face at home, he will do it. Therefore, much depends on how the current contacts between Iran and the US proceed in the days ahead. In any case, the war should be coming to an end soon.
Trump claims that he is negotiating with Iran for cceasefire. If this true and considering the fact he said Iran must surronder unconditionally at the begining of the aggression on Iran. How do you assess his success in acheiving his goals?
Trump is in urgent need to end the war with Iran because he is losing support at home, and faces sharp losses in the mid-term elections in November. At the end of the day, Trump will have achieved none of the presumed goals that triggered this unprovoked, unlawful, and senseless attack against Iran. All he wants is to save face at home, but I think it is too late for that, too. I believe it is in Iran’s interest to end the war on terms consistent with its national interests. The task is not easy. But Iran’s diplomacy and sagacity will find a reasonable way out.
If Iran and the US decide to end the war, will Israel respect the US decision?
If Iran and the US reach an agreement to end the war, Israel will have no choice but to respect it. Israel surely understands that even with unlimited American support, it could not defeat Iran. Once Trump says “the war is over,” Israel will have neither the will nor the capability to continue its aggression against Iran.
How do you assess the public opinion in Turkey towards the US- Israeli aggression on Iran?
Turkish public opinion is strongly in favor of the people of Iran. This is not just a reaction toward Israel’s policies in the region, but also an expression of support for the right of the Iranian people to defend themselves against aggression. The right of self-defense is enshrined in the UN Charter. This is why Turkey has resisted all attempts – and there have been many - to draw itself into the war against its neighbor. The two countries have lived in peace for centuries. The Iranian people have shown resilience in the face of unlawful acts committed by American and Israeli aggressors. I look forward to continuing our solidarity with the people of Iran.
