Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has denounced the U.S. military aggression against three nuclear facilities in Iran, saying Washington must accept responsibility for the consequences of its war on the Islamic Republic.
Baqaei made the remark on Sunday while speaking to CNN after the U.S. bombed three nuclear sites of Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow.
The attack on Iran was “a betrayal of diplomacy” by the administration of President Donald Trump, he said.
The spokesperson pointed out that the Trump administration cannot talk about diplomacy while betraying the same by launching attacks and helping the Israeli regime in its hostile action against Iran.
Emphasizing that Iran had made every effort for diplomacy and peace, Baqaei stated that history would not forget what was being done by the U.S. government. “No one knows what the future holds, but what is certain is that the responsibility for the consequences of this war lies with the United States and the Zionist regime,” he said.
Baqaei declined to specify how Iran might retaliate the unprovoked U.S. strikes, but said Tehran is entitled to exercise its right to self-defense. “We will definitely do that,” he added.
He also deplored Trump's threats of further attacks as “bullying on a global scale,” warning that the U.S.-Israeli war of aggression has put the region in an unprecedentedly dangerous situation.
Referring to the retaliatory attacks against Israel, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified that Tehran had shown complete restraint in responding to the aggression and only targeted the regime’s military and strategic assets, IRNA reported.
On Sunday, the United States joined Israel’s war against Iran by attacking three nuclear sites, in violation of international norms, including the United Nations Charter, the Non-Proliferation Treaty (N.P.T.), and the fundamental principles of respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries.
Following the attacks, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in a statement, said that Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people.
