Saudi Arabia is weighing whether to cut off Qatar — literally — by constructing a canal along its entire border, reports said Friday.
The move, if pushed through, would turn the tiny peninsular nation into a full-fledged island.
It comes amid a yearlong dispute between the two neighbors over Qatar’s alleged ties to terrorism.
“As a citizen, I am impatiently waiting for the details of the implementation of the East Salwa island project,” tweeted senior adviser Saud al-Qahtani.
Analysts told Press TV, however, that the canal is likely just a bluff.
“If you create a canal, you do Qatar a favor,” said
Ai Shihabi, founder of the Washington-based Arabia Foundation. “Because you create a ‘moat’ to protect them when now their land borders are fully exposed to Saudi Arabia.”
