ISRAEL has blasted Palestinian targets in Gaza with a new series of airstrikes, as tense relations between the two countries continue to intensify.

In the latest incident, a number of successful attacks were carried out by the Israeli military.

Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, a military wing of Hamas said on Saturday: "Israeli jets carried out strikes on the Ayn Jalut position, which belongs to the resistance movement in western Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza Strip.”

The Israeli Defence Force also confirmed the strikes.

The statement read: "Several minutes ago our military jets carried out an airstrike on terror targets of the Hamas military wing in southern Gaza Strip.

“The airstrike was carried out in response to an attempt to cross the border and inflict damages to the border infrastructure, which took place earlier in the day.”

Palestinians have been holding rallies near the Gaza border for the last two months.

Israeli forces have been attacking protestors since they first gathered on March 30.

Israel and Palestine have been at war for more than half a century.

Palestine have launched five confirmed airstrikes against Israel this year.

Tensions between the two countries have also risen amid the controversy surrounding the moving of the US Embassy.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump relocated the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

A total of 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on the day Trump relocated the diplomatic building as clashes between police and protesters broke out.

Previously, the US would not open an embassy in any city that was disputed land until a peace deal had been reached between the two sides.

Theresa May has expressed concern over the violence and Trump’s decision to move the building.

In a statement, she said: “The UK remains firmly committed to a two-state solution with Jerusalem a shared capital.

“We are concerned by the reports of violence and loss of life in Gaza.

“We urge calm and restraint to avoid actions destructive to peace efforts.”
