Iranian disabled athletes snatch 2nd gold Medal in New Zealand champs

Tehran, Jan. 29, 2011 – Iranian athlete AbdolReza Jokar bagged a gold medal in Men's javelin throw F52/53 in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand on Saturday, according to IRNA.

Jokar snatched 934 points and ranked first in F52/53 class in the competition.

This is Iran's second gold during the competitions.

Meanwhile, Jokar's rivals from Slovenia and South Africa ranked second and third respectively.

So far, Iranian athletes have snatched two gold, two silver and four bronze medals in IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch.

Another Iranian athlete, Peyman Nasiri, set a championship record in the men’s 1500m T20 with a time of 3:57:10 and won the gold medal.

The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships opened in Christchurch on January 21 and will continue till January 31.


Over 1,000 athletes from 73 countries are competing in the event.

The events are open to athletes in all disability classes and have been a part of the Paralympic program since the first Paralympic Games in Rome, Italy, in 1960.
