This summer, the governor of Russia’s Astrakhan region Alexander Zhilkin is going to undertake a yacht journey from Astrakhan to Mazandaran, a Caspian province in northern Iran, to promote active cooperation between the two countries. This is going to be an outstanding though, of course, not the largest-scale project of cooperation between the Astrakhan region and Iran’s northern provinces. Mr. Alexander Zhilkin commented on the issue in an exclusive interview with the VOR.

Astrakhan State University is opening its Masters` School at the University of Guilan, in the province of the same name in northern Iran. ‘This is our present to Iranian students who study the Russian language and culture”, Mr. Zhilkin said…

"As soon as they complete their Master’s degrees at Astrakhan University, these students will receive Russian diplomas. It was our initiative to open a branch of our university in Iran as we would like to help local students with learning Russian. Since many businessmen in Iran count on cooperation with Russia, having a good command of the Russian language is a must. Russian-speaking businessmen are in high demand in Iran."

"Professors from Astrakhan University will assist their Iranian colleagues in teaching local students. Cooperation between the two universities dates back to 2002, when the first students from Iran arrived in Astrakhan to practice Russian, while their colleagues from Astrakhan went to Rasht to study Farsi. The results were quite impressive," Mr. Zhilkin says…

"The way Farsi is being taught at Astrakhan University speaks for itself: all graduates of this department receive very good job offers, even in Europe."

"Russian-speaking students in Iran also start successful careers. And those who enroll at our Masters` School at the University of Guilan, will enjoy Russian language training much longer. Graduates of the Farsi language department of Astrakhan University and Russian-speaking students of Guilan University usually work as interpreters in different companies, but are also welcome as teachers or journalists…"

"However, Mr. Zhilkin regrets that very few of them become tour guides who assist people travelling between Russia and Iran. Tourism is still an underdeveloped field of cooperation between the two nations. Meanwhile, there are a lot of other sights in Iran apart from the sandy beaches of Kish Island. The Astrakhan region is not a popular destination for Iranian tourists either. Millions of Russian tourists travel to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, and very few visit Iran. But it can`t last forever," thinks Alexander Zhilkin.
